Encouraging Aboriginal People to Explore Health Care Careers

Program Details

ACCESS and Vancouver Community College will partner to offer the Aboriginal Gateway to Health Careers Program.
The program is designed to encourage Aboriginal people to explore and pursue careers in the health care field while offering essential skills, ugrading, health career preparation courses, and individual support.

Program Outline - 16 weeks in-class with 2 weeks reading time

  • Customized Essential Skills training
  • TOWES (test of workspace essentials skills)
  • Standard First Aid
  • WHMIS
  • Food Safe
  • Cultural exploration
  • Field trips and health facility tours
  • Developmental growth in basic education - English and Math
  • Academic and personal preparation to enter into the Health Care fields.
  • Care of self
  • Basic communication
  • Life planning
  • Develop a portfolio
  • Identify personal career goal
  • Pre and post program personal coaching and support

Eligibility

  • Aboriginal ancestry and able to work in Canada
  • Willingness to learn about careers in the health field
  • Caring and compassion for others
  • Ability to work in teams
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, commitment and have a positive attitude
  • Dedication to maintain a holistic and healthy lifestyle
  • Be willing to get a criminal records check

 

 

INTAKE DATES:
January 4, 2010 - May 7, 2010
May 31, 2010 - October 1, 2010
November 1, 2010 - March 4, 2011
